FIC leadership and staff pay tribute to victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi at Ntarama genocide memorial
On May 22, 2026, as part of the Kwibuka 32 commemoration, the leadership and staff of the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) visited the Ntarama Genocide Memorial in Bugesera District to honour the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. During the visit, they laid wreaths and observed a moment of silence in remembrance of those who lost their lives. Guided through different sections of the memorial, they learnt about the events that led to the Genocide, the international community’s failure to intervene, the decisive intervention of the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) to stop the killings, and Rwanda’s remarkable journey of rebuilding through unity, reconciliation, accountability, and resilience.
Speaking at the memorial, Gashumba Jeanne Pauline, Director General of FIC, described the visit as deeply moving and underscored the importance of preserving memory and drawing lessons from history.
“Kwibuka is a time to stand in solidarity with survivors, honour the victims, and renew our collective commitment to preventing genocide and its ideology. Preserving this history and educating future generations is a shared responsibility; therefore, continued efforts are paramount to ensure such atrocities never happen again.” She noted.
Gashumba commended Rwanda Patriotic Front under the leadership of His Excellency Paul Kagame, for its decisive role in halting the Genocide and guiding the country’s recovery and reconstruction.
