FIC senior managers and staff commemorated the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi
On April 24, 2025, the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) held a commemoration event at its premises to honour the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Mr. Valens Bimenyimana, a PhD researcher from the University of Rwanda’s Centre for Conflict Management, delivered a compelling talk highlighting the genocide's root causes and its devastating impact on Rwandan society. He emphasized the critical role of the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) in ending the genocide and laying the foundation for unity and national rebuilding.
Bimenyimana encouraged participants to reject genocide ideology, preserve national achievements, and counter denial narratives. He reminded staff, especially the youth, of their duty to learn from history and safeguard Rwanda’s unity as the cornerstone of sustainable development. The event also featured a testimony from Mr. Marcel Rutagarama, a genocide survivor, who shared his harrowing journey of survival during the 1994 Genocide that claimed many lives of his relatives.
In her remarks, FIC Director General Jeanne Pauline Gashumba praised the leadership that ended the Genocide and restored peace in Rwanda. She urged staff to embrace unity, personal growth, and resilience, emphasizing to always strive to be better in improving their lives as a way to honor the victims. She added that learning from the past should guide efforts to build a stronger, united Rwanda free from all forms of genocide ideology.
